Journal For Plague Lovers, however, sees the Manics tackling a past even closer to home: their own. With a sleeve painted by artist Jenny Saville and words culled from the notebooks of Richey Edwards, the band’s former lyricist and guitarist who apparently disappeared into the fog back in 1995, Journal For Plague Lovers consciously harks back to the group’s excellently caustic 1994 album The Holy Bible. Journal For Plague Lovers is a softer album than that, one that perhaps imagines The Holy Bible’s razor edges through a sepia filter. But a recording job by Steve Albini leaves songs like "Peeled Apples" and "She Bathed Herself In A Bath Of Bleach" feeling satisfyingly raw and there remains something undeniably thrilling about the pairing of James Dean Bradfield’s vocal--gruff, passionate--and the strange, cryptic imagery conjured up by Edwards’ lyrics: "This beauty a dipping neophobia", he choruses, soulfully on "Facing Page: Top Left", and you remember what a strange, special band the Manics can be when they put their minds to it. ––Louis Pattison

With only four full-length albums and a couple of live records to their name, it's hard to view this 2006 two-disc Cinderella set as being essential, especially as the thorough Rocked, Wired & Bluesed: The Greatest Hits was released early the preceding year. Nevertheless, the two-disc Gold contains almost everything a Cinderella fan could want or possibly need. Almost.For some reason, the group decided to opt for live renditions of two of its most well-known recordings "Gypsy Road" and "Somebody Save Me" over the original versions. This flaw aside, Cinderella comb through their other releases to present this 30-song collection of their other hits, including the power ballad "Don't Know What You Got ('Til It's Gone)," the hard-driving "Shake Me," and the MTV favorite "Nobody's Fool." Regardless, there really isn't much reason to purchase Gold for anyone who already owns the economically sensible single-disc 20th Century Masters or Rocked, Wire & Bluesed collections, and those with just a casual interest in the band would be better off with either of those collections instead. Sinatra was one of the greatest voices of his--or any--generation, and for the most part, these songs are some of Old Blue Eyes' finest works: among the best are "Come Fly with Me", "Lady Is a Tramp" and "I Get a Kick out of You".But with such an immense and classic back-catalogue of songs to choose from, it's a shame that the compilers felt it necessary to add so much cheese: "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and "Mrs Robinson", for example, don't do Sinatra, the songs, or the listener any justice.
